SILVERWEED

Although this is a common roadside weed, it may also be found growing abundantly and much more luxuriantly in wet pastures.
Its rootstock is the centre from which many rooting runners radiate, sending up its long, pinnate leaves, which show the silvery whiteness of the underside caused by the silky down with which they are covered. The deeply-toothed leafiets are not opposite, but alternate and there is the very peculiar arrangement of a miniature leatlet being placed between each two large ones. This form is known as imparipinnate.
The solitary yellow flower, large in proportion to the plant, is borne singly on a long stalk, rising from the axil of the leaf. The calyx is cleft into five lobes, which alternate with five longer and divided bracteoles. There are five petals and many stamens and carpels.
It flowers chiefiy from June to August, and sparingly much later in the year.

Flowering from June to September. One of the most graceful and charming of our native plants. It abounds in moist, shady woods. A favourite position for it cinquefoil Silverweed is the rotten centre of some old beech stump from wruch it will spread in a loose cluster, or growing on the ground, often in great abundance. The roots are cinquefoil Silverweed fine and scattered along the creeping knotted pink stems.
Along the south and west coasts of England, and in the Firth of Forth, but rarely on the Irish coast Silverweed cinquefoil, this plant may be found growing from crevices in the rocks. It is much more rare generally, than it was formerly. It has an erect, branching, woody stem, rising from Silverweed cinquefoil three to six feet high, and three or four inches thick. The leaves are large, long-stalked and velvety, and roundish in genera³ outline. They are cut into five or cinquefoil Silverweed seven lobes with rounded teeth; they are also plaited, the folds running from the stalk along the middle of each lobe and a reverse fold to the indent between the Silverweed cinquefoil lobes.
