AGRIMONY
Agrimonia Eupatoria
Family ROSACEAE
Growing frequently by the roadside, borders of fields and waste places, this is one of the prettiest of wayside plants.
It is perennial. From the short and woody rootstock rise the erect, hairy stems, two or three feet high.
The leaves are "interruptedly" pinnate, more or or less clothed with sof t hairs, the leaflets increasing in size as they near the terminalleaflet.
The golden - starred flowers are borne on the long, leafless flowers talk in the form of a raceme, in which each flower is attached to the central stem by a stalk of its own.
The flowers consist of a top-shaped tubular and spiny calyx, with contracted mouth and five overlapping lobes; five golden petals, ten or more stamens, and two carpels sunk in the calyxtube, their styles and two-lobed stigmas protruding.
As the lower fruits ripen the raceme lengthens, and the calyx-tubes and their spines harden and assume a drooping position, owing to the downward curving of their little footstalks.

It is really the uppermost of the five petals, but, owing Agrimony to the flower-stalk invariably bending over near the summit, it appears to us always as the lowest. Flowering from March to May. Common in copse, on hedgebank and roadside Agrimony throughout the country, as far north as Sutherland. From a perennial rootstock, with short runners or barren shoots, rise the very erect two - edged stems, pale brown and smooth, to Agrimony a height of two or three feet, branching in the upper part. The oblong leaves are clean-cut without stalks.
The glorious scarlet flowers are from three to four inches in diameter. The pistil, which afterwards develops into the familiar "poppy Agrimony-head," is surmounted by the many stigmas which form an eight to twelve rayed disk. The seed capsule is smooth and short, slightly stalked above the receptacle. The plants contain Agrimony a milky juice of a narcotic nature. The flowering period extends from June to September.
